Madame Alexander Kitten Doll

From LoveToKnow Antiques

The Madame Alexander Kitten Doll, introduced in 1961, has become one of the most highly sought after vintage dolls in the Baby Dolls series. Manufactured by The Madame Alexander Doll Company, the Kitten Doll was meant to be used as a play doll and was less expensive than the more elaborately designed and dressed display dolls sold by the company.

Styles and Sizes of Kitten Dolls

There were several styles and sizes of the now vintage Kitten Dolls made by the Madame Alexander Doll Company in the early 1960s.

Kitten Doll

The Madame Alexander Kitten Doll is 18 inches tall, with fat rosy pink cheeks and a beautiful, facial expression. The majority of Kitten Dolls had rooted lemon, blonde hair, although there were some produced with dark hair. These dolls have beautiful eyes that open and close with real eyelashes. This doll was available with blue, gray or green eye color. The average selling price for a Kitten Doll in mint condition, without original clothes, at online auction sites is approximately $85.00.

The Madame Alexander Company also produced a 24 inch version of the Kitten Doll which was sold in 1961. The larger sized doll was the same as the 18 inch version except for the size.

Kitten Crier Dolls

There were some Kitten Dolls and Mama Kitten Dolls that were manufactured with criers sewn inside their cloth bodies. When the doll was placed on its stomach it made a crying sound.

Littlest Kitten

The Littlest Kitten Doll is an eight inch vinyl doll which was introduced in 1960. Her hair is a rooted short, blonde. Littlest Kitten has eyes that open and close, rosy cheeks, and red lips. This Madame Alexander baby doll has appreciated more in value then most of the other collectible dolls from the Baby Dolls series. In mint condition, a Littlest Kitten doll is priced at approximately $225 at online collector doll sites.

Lively Kitten

Measuring 14 inches in length, The Lively Kitten Doll has a cloth body with vinyl arms and legs. She has rooted blond hair, aqua blue, open-and-close, sleep eyes, and pink rosy cheeks. On the middle of her back is a knob that turns to make the doll’s head wiggle and turn similar to a Thumbelina doll. Lively Kitten, manufactured in 1961, came with an instruction booklet on how to operate the knob.

Mama Kitten

The Mama Kitten Doll was also introduced in 1961. She measures 18 inches and has a wind up knob that makes her head move side to side, and she also has a crier inside her soft, cloth body. Her head, legs and arms are vinyl. Like the other Kitten Dolls, Mama Kitten has rooted hair, sleep eyes that open and close, and platinum blonde hair.

Sucking Kitten

Also introduced in 1961 was a Kitten Doll that sucked her thumb. The 18 inch doll had very realistic features including tiny curved toes.

Markings and Tags

Madame Alexander Kitten Dolls are embossed with the name “Alexander” and the year on the back of their necks. Also at the back of the neck is a tag that reads “Kitten by Madame Alexander”. The original Kitten Doll clothing will always have a tag sewn on to the item. Each Madame Alexander kitten doll also came with a hang tag on her wrist.

Original Kitten Doll Clothing

Much of the original clothing worn by Kitten Dolls has been lost or damaged over the decades. This is mostly because these dolls were meant to be played with by their owners. Some of the original clothing that kitten dolls wore included:

  • Sheer organza dresses with lace trim
  • Satin bloomers
  • Organza robes
  • Silky slips and night gowns
  • Rompers
  • Cotton diapers held closed by a gold safety pin
  • Crocheted booties with a single pink flower and a pink satin bow
  • Lace trimmed bonnets with satin ties
  • White leather shoes

Conclusion

The Kitten Doll is just one of the many beautiful dolls in the Baby Doll series by Madame Alexander dolls. Other dolls from this series include the Pussycat Dolls, Baby Cuddles and the Huggums collection.

Edith, you may want to take her to a restoration specialist to see if something can be done about that. Good luck.

Susan- I believe that all of the Kitten Dolls were manufactured of the same materials. You should be able to get a price guide on MA dolls through your local library. It will have all the information you need. Hope this helps
