I've got two small John Milton books (paradise lost and paradise regained) that have a publishing date of 1752. It appears they were a private printing of only 13 copies. The books are complete but the covers are not attached. I've got some very detailed pictures but no clue who can help me appraise and possibly sell them. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 1866 by The Derby & Miller Publishing Life and campaingns of LIEUT-Gen US Grant By Rev. P. C. Headley I'd like to sell it, how much should I ask for the book. Thank you for your time. Rick

You are welcome Shirley. I love the illustrations in old kids books. :) Sometimes they are actually worth more than the book.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

Thanks Marve. Your info was a big help.

-- Contributed by: Shirley

Although I can't find the exact title, similar titles in very fine condition sell for $20 or less. While there is no way to appraise it without seeing it the truth is that few old books are appraised at more than $30.00. FOr the most accurate appraisal you should take it to a local appraiser. Good luck.

We have a book titled 'Children's Story Book' "More than 60 famous stories. With new illustrations by Romney Gay" It was published by Whitman Publishing Co. in 1914. The cover has a colored picture of Little Red Riding Hood with the wolf looking out from behind a tree. The book is roughly 11.5" x 8.5" x 1.25". The covers' edges are worn and a previous owners name is written in pencil on the inside. Other than that the book is in excellent condition. I haven't been able to find the book anywhere on the web Can you give me any idea of value? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

-- Contributed by: Shirley

Sally you did not give much information. Depending on the condition of the books you can expect about $5 per book, maybe a bit more if you have a complete set. Check with a local dealer for accurate evaluation in your area.

If this is the one I am thinking of you have an excellent find. There were only 10,000 copies of the first edition A.C.McCLurg printed. In good condition the first edition book can command up to 300.00 in the right cir...stances. I suggest you take it to a local appraiser experienced in pricing books for an accurate evaluation. Good luck.

I have several intereting copies of books on spies and intelligence, but recently realized that my collection contained a 7.5x5 brown cloth, hard copy of Tarzan and the Ant Men. Published by Grosset & Dunlap, 1924, by arrangement with A.C. Clurg & Company. The hardcover itself has a black picture of Tarzan standing on an elephant's head holding a spear, both trumpeting their way through the jungle. The inside cover has a drawing of Africa with animals and peoples. The title page shows Tarzan on the elephant, spear in hand, from a side view. Can anyone tell me about this particular edition? Thank you.

-- Contributed by: Ric Jordan

Nettie, you will need to take your book to someone who specializes in antique tomes. A book's value is very dependent on its condition and without a date I could not begin to tell you the worth. Good luck.

I have a "Robinson Crusoe' No date orISBN number It is signed bySamul M Williams on the Christmas of 1882. Can you tell me it's value?

-- Contributed by: Nettie Ravareau

If was printed in a magazine in 1910..if this is the copy you have I found it for $75.00 on Abe Books. It was part of several collections of his work but I can't find anywhere where it was published on its own until much later. You should take your copy to a local appraiser for the best evaluation.

Hello, My name is Annaliesa Hanson, i have a book of the poem "IF" by Rudyard Kipling, which i believe to be a first addition, copy wirtten in 1910. I was wondering if you could give me advice as to the value of this item and if its worth getting appraised. To me it looks in fair condition and i believe it to be one of a kind. If you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be great. Thank you so much.

-- Contributed by: Annaliesa

Robert, those are awesome books! Great find. Lady of the Lake is worth less than 10.00 in most cases, depending on the condition, provenance, and other factors. Tale of Two Cities by Dickens is generally found at less than five dollars, although there are some variations on this. FOr an accurate appraisal you should contact someone locally. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

Jill, George Bernard Shaw was a prolific writer, finding his success in plays and theater. Man and SUperman was originally published in 1903. Even the very early copies of this play sell for about five dollars unless there is some other facet to drive the price up, such as unique provenance or autograph. For an accurate appraisal you should take it to a local appraiser. Best of luck.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

yes, i have come across two books that i now own from a garage sell, they are tale of two cities from Dickens and lady of the lake by scoot, lady of the lake was printed in1903 , the version i have now and the other, tale of two cities was printed in 1923 ,no, i don't think i want to sell them, but well, i am interested in if they are worth anything dollar wise, and if not, who cares? they are both wonderful books!

I'm trying to find a value for a book I bought several years ago at a flea market. It has a green cover, MAN AND SUPERMAN I believe it is some sort of playbook, under the title it also says A Comedy And A Philosophy By Bernard Shaw It says at the bottom New York Brentanos, 1918 then has a typed price 40 cents net. THANKS!

Tina, I found volume three (1784) for $50.00 and would assume that your set without volume two would be worth double that. If you had volume two it would more than likely add to the value. This is just ballpark. Much of the value depends on condition, where you are, etc. Good luck.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

I am trying to find the value of a cpl books I have they are 1784 and they are very small books. they are The Poetical works of john gay including his fables. I have the original 1st & 3rd, missing the second. thanks

John, I first need to tell you that we don't do appraisals on LoveToKnow. There are too many variables in items for it to be done effectively on the Internet. All values are based on condition as well as other factors. Saying that. After a lot of digging I found your books on Antiquarian Books for a little over $4,500.00 you can view the description here: http://www.ilab.org/db/search.php?All=illustrata You will need to scroll to almost the bottom of the page. Good luck.

Alan, a 1977 book is not old enough to be worth much at all unless there is something unique about it. You should take it to a local appraiser if you have any questions regarding its worth. Good luck.

Debbie The Penny Magazine was published each Saturday for the working classes, to help them raise their awareness. It was part of Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge's program for liberal reform of British society and had information about nearly everything. A single copy would not be worth much however, generally you can find an entire year collection of this magazine for under $100. The best thing to do is to take it to an appraiser for an accurate evaluation.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

Jerome, I can't find a value for The 20 Mule Team Brigade anywhere although there are a number of texts uploaded to the Internet. You should take it to a local appraiser for an accurate evaluation. The poor condition will make a huge difference in value. Slave Songs of the United States is very collectible, by both bibliophiles and collectors of Black Americana. You don;t say which edition yours is so it is impossible to determine even a rough estimate of value. First editions of this book in excellent condition can command up to 1,000.00 at the right auction but that is unusual.

-- Contributed by: Marye Audet

I have a (worn cover and old pages)it's called The Penny Magazine printed in 1837 it is a very neat book and I was wondering what it might be worth can you help me?

Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan is a classic. The value of an antique book is dependent on many things, the condition being one of them. The best thing you can do is to take the books to a local antique dealer or auction house specializing in antiques and have them go through them. Good luck!

That is amazing. For our readers that are not familiar with this book... The book was written for his children..but he would not allow it to be published until 1934. After publication it became wildly popular among those who read it but is largely unknown among his works, if that makes sense. It was syndicated in newspapers and many people made their own copies of the book by scrapbooking the cut out newspaper stories every week. I couldn't find much either..I did find this, if it helps at all...http://rarelibrary.com/book/Dic-b/100/LIFE+OF+OUR+LORD%2C+THE.html

Good luck!

Yes Toni, I have. It is by MRS. HB Paull who translated it from the German...There is a write up on it, if you have access to archives for the New York Times, July 22,1894 which is a press release from a different publisher. This book was published by several publishers, with the earliest (to my knowledge) being in 1872. She was the first to call the fairy tales Andersen's Fairy Tales. The original German title is Household Tales Told for Children! You certainly have a treasure there. For the best appraisal you should take it to a local appraiser because value will be determined by condition. I hope this helps.

Chris, Thomas Hardy ran the serial version of Tess of the D'Ubervilles in the July through December 1891 London Graphic. Emmeline Lott was a governess for the son of the Viceroy. She spent much time in the imperial harems of Egypt and Turkey. I have acquired a book written by Samuel Clemens aka(Mark Twain)The title of the book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The cover of the book is gold, there is no copy write date, or no reprint dates. The pages seem to be fine paper. My guess is the book must be from the late 1800's, in doing some uneducated online researches so far. Can you help me determine it's estimated value?
-- Contributed by: Tim Bab...

That is something only you can determine. Worth it in terms of monetary value in the future? Worth it in terms of historic value? You should consult an antique book dealer for a professional opinion.

My mother has several small leather bound books that belonged to her mom. They are novel's shrunk down in size so soldiers in WW 1 could carry them in their pockets. She doesn't know their value but she says they are in x-lnt shape. The leather is in good shape and is in different colors, some blue, some black but in great shape. She needs to know their value because she wants to sell them. Anyone got ideas on how to obtain values of these books?
