Generally speaking vintage silver will have developed a beautiful patina that can't be reproduced but is created by time and use. The best way to educagte yourself is to get a good book on silver. Check Amazon for several titles.Good luck.
-- Contributed by: Marye AudetI see in ads for vintage (sir christopher) sterling pieces frequent reference made to "older sets" being of higher quality. What distinctions are there between "older" and "newer" and can they be told apart by markings or some other means? What resources are available for a collector to learn more about the offerings (grades of quality, or types of pieces) in a given pattern?

Is there a way to find out the value of the set?
I have a 2-piece, 5 light solid sterling silver candelabra that says "Baroque" by Wallace on the bottom with a number 266. Can someone tell me the significance of the number on the bottom and where I might find out the value of this piece?
-- Contributed by: K. JewellPossibly the Normandie pattern from 1933? it is the only one I can find that looks similar to your description. Hope that helps.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen RobertsI have an incomplete set of Wallace Sterling & I can't find the pattern anywhere. It has a strip of single roses from the tip of the handle down almost to the margin of the fork. On each side of the strip of roses is a narrow strip of leaves. I thought the pattern name had "rose" in it, but I've looked at Rosepoint and that isn't it. Any clues? Each piece is stamped with Wallace Sterling on it. Thank you
